Memorial Day is Monday, May 25, and many Americans will have the day off to recognize this federal holiday. With the school year drawing to an end and the summer solstice less than a month away, the holiday is often viewed as the official kick-off to the summer season. Celebrators will often use their extra day off to host a barbecue, have some fun in the sun or take the first trip of the summer travel season.

Of course, Memorial Day has a more somber and respectful side. It’s a day to commemorate Americans who have given their lives for the country. A big part of this recognition is the National Moment of Remembrance, when Americans are encouraged at 3 p.m. local time to pause for a minute of silence “to remember and honor those who have died in service to the nation,” according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
