Donald Trump Uses El Chapo’s Prison Break to Underline Anti-Immigration Views
After news broke that the notorious drug lord escaped from prison, Donald Trump used the story as an opportunity to underline his assertions that Mexico’s struggles with crime is brought to America through illegal immigration. He wrote on Twitter:
Mexico’s biggest drug lord escapes from jail. Unbelievable corruption and USA is paying the price. I told you so!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 12, 2015
Trump went on to tweet, “When will the people, and the media, start to apologize to me for my statement, ‘Mexico is sending…,’ which turned out to be true?”
The is El Chapo’s second escape from prison. He first broke out in 2001 and remained at large until being apprehended again in early 2014.
Forbes once estimated El Chapo’s net worth at a whopping $1 billion.
Republican Leaders, David Letterman Speak Out Against Donald Trump
Key Republican leaders and politicians have distanced themselves from the presidential candidate. The Republican National Committee Chair, Reince Priebus, even told Trump to “tone it down” because his rhetoric is harming the Republican Party, reports The Fiscal Times.
Lindsey Graham, senator for South Carolina and another presidential candidate for the 2016 election, also spoke out against Trump’s remarks on CNN’s “State of the Union.” Graham said of the Republican Party, “If we do not reject this way of thinking clearly, without any ambiguity, we will have lost our way. We will have lost the moral authority, in my view, to govern this great nation.”
David Letterman also took the time out of his retirement to roast Donald Trump with a Top Ten List that he read to a San Antonio audience. Letterman’s list included a couple of quips about “that thing on Donald Trump’s head.”
Miss USA Pageant Loses Out on $2 Million or More
Despite the continuing controversy over Donald Trump’s anti-immigration sentiments, the multi-billionaire’s Miss USA pageant carried on Sunday evening. The event, which was dropped by NBC over Trump’s remarks, aired on cable network Reelz. The crown was passed to Miss Oklahoma, Olivia Jordan.
The network switch cost the pageant a great deal of money. NBC was expected to fork over $2 million to $3 million to air the event, but Reelz paid no more than $100,000, reports Forbes.
There was no mention of Trump during the pageant, and the event included a segment showcasing some of the contestants’ immigrant roots, reports USA Today.
During the interview portion, Jordan also spoke about America’s need to improve race relations. “We have not solved this issue,” she said. “We really need to work on being an accepting society.”
