There’s nothing consumers hate more than fees.
They hate them so much that, when they need a new credit card, many consumers flock to cards with no fees or credit cards that offer simple and easy-to-understand fee structures (we highlight a few of those simple credit cards in the Best Credit Cards in America series).
When you are trying to save money on interest by transferring your balance on one credit card to another with a lower interest rate, nearly every credit card will impose a 3% balance transfer fee on the amount of the transaction. So if you have to transfer a $4,000 balance, you will end up owing an additional $120 from the start. Ouch!
Thankfully, there are a few credit cards that do not have this fee. Here are six cards that will let you transfer a balance without an upfront balance transfer fee.
1. Chase Slate
For some time, Chase Slate has been the only credit card that offers 0% APR promotional financing on balance transfers, with no balance transfer fee. New applicants receive 15 months of interest-free financing on both new purchases and balance transfers completed within 60 days, with no fees. Other benefits include a free monthly FICO score, as well as access to Chase’s Blueprint program. Blueprint allows you to avoid interest charges by paying off some purchases in full while carrying a balance on others. Blueprint also contains a suite of budgeting and goal-setting tools. There is no annual fee for this card.
2. PenFed Promise
The beauty of this card is that it has no fees at all, including balance transfer fees. New applicants receive 4.99% APR promotional rate for balance transfers, followed by a standard interest rate of 7.99% – 16.99% which applies to both new purchases and balance transfers. In addition, this card has no annual fee, no foreign transaction fees and no penalty interest rate. To apply, you must first join the Pentagon Federal Credit Union, which you may do as an employee or family member of an employee in many different government and defense organizations. Or you can join a military support charity for a small, one-time fee.
3. Barclaycard Ring
This is one of the most creative credit cards ever offered, but not because they dreamed up new fees. Instead, the Barclaycard Ring is managed cooperatively through online interaction with the community of cardholders. And with constant input from customers, it’s no surprise that this card lacks many of the fees that are common on other cards, like the balance transfer fee. Furthermore, all cardholders receive a standard interest rate of 8% that applies to both new purchases and balance transfers and is extremely competitive. And of course, there is no annual fee for this card.
4. Simmons First Visa Platinum Credit Card
This card has one of the lowest standard interest rates offered, 7.25%. So low, in fact, that it was the runner-up in the most recent Best Low-Interest Credit Cards in America ranking. So not only can cardholders enjoy this interest rate on new purchases, but they can transfer their existing balances to this card with no balance transfer fee. Otherwise, this is a fairly basic Visa card that offers no rewards, but has no annual fee either.
5. Capital One VentureOne Rewards
This card offers 1.25 miles per dollar spent, and miles are worth one cent each as statement credits toward travel rewards. In addition, there are no balance transfer fees, and this card offers a standard interest rate of 11.9% – 21.9%, depending on the creditworthiness of the cardholder at the time of application. There is no annual fee for this card. It was the first runner-up in the Best Travel Rewards Credit Cards ranking.
6. Navy Federal Credit Union Platinum
This card offers a standard interest rate of between 7.99% and 18% APR depending on your credit worthiness when you apply. And if you manage to earn a very low rate, you may want to transfer your existing balances to this card, with no balance transfer fee. To apply for this card, you must join the Navy Federal Credit Union. You may be eligible based on your current employment or retiree status with many defense-related organizations, or that of your grandparents, parents, spouses, siblings, grandchildren, children and household members. There is no annual fee for this card.
Before you apply for any credit card, it’s helpful to know what your credit score is so that you target your search to cards you’re more likely to qualify for. You can get your credit scores for free from many sources — including Credit.com, where you can see two of your credit scores for free every 30 days.
