What Golden State Warriors’ NBA Finals Win Is Worth to MVP Andre Iguodala and Team

Golden State Warriors

It was a victory Tuesday night for the Golden State Warriors, who beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 105-97 in Game 6 of the NBA Finals and won the coveted NBA Championship title. The Warriors brought a strong game to the court throughout the season, thanks to star players like Stephen Curry and finals MVP Andre Iguodala. The team’s win is proof that its players had what it took to be the best.

But an NBA Championship is good for more than just bragging rights — this win can earn an NBA team, its owners and players tens of millions of dollars more, reports the Sun Sentinel. This extra money comes from NBA payouts, improved ticket and merchandise sales and endorsement deals. From the team down to the players, here’s how an NBA title can benefit the bank accounts of the Golden State Warriors.

Golden State Warriors’ NBA Finals Win Will Boost Their Value

Golden State Warriors owners Joe Lacob and Peter Gruber have already earned millions on the team. They paid $450 million for the team in 2010, and in just five years the Warriors’ value has nearly tripled to a $1.3 billion valuation as of January 2015, according to Forbes. Many NBA teams have seen similar bursts in valuation, as shown by the 11 teams valued over $1 billion in 2015. In 2014, only three teams were valued over $1 billion.

By the next NBA season, it’s likely Lacob and Gruber will see their investment pass the triple mark and earn them a 200 percent return — and that’s without considering the team’s profits.

An NBA championship can push a team’s profits way up — just look at the San Antonio Spurs, who won the NBA finals in 2014. Forbes reported the team’s profits in 2012 at just $15 million; in the 2013-2014 season, profits increased to $39 million. The Spurs saw more earnings in 2015, earning an operating income of $41 million. If the Golden State Warriors experience a similar boost in earnings, they should see operating income increase from $45 million in 2015 to possibly $117 million in 2016.

Then there are the finals payouts and bonuses from the NBA, which can add a nice multi-million dollar boost to profits. Last year, the Spurs earned $4.1 million in bonuses for winning the NBA championship, according to the Associated Press. It’s likely the Golden State Warriors will see similar prize money with its NBA finals win.
